MSP Spreads Scots from Aberdeen to Argentina!

Dr Bill Wilson, SNP MSP for the West of Scotland, shared his love of the Scots language with primary school pupils aboard The Reading Bus on Friday 16th January.

Dr. Wilson read two Scots poems by Hugh Macdiarmid, “The Watergaw” and “The Sauchs in the Reuch Heuch Hauch”, and talked about the Scots language with the students. He said “the beauty of Macdiarmid’s poetry could not be expressed in English the way it is in Scots.” The children then told Dr. Wilson about the goals of The Reading Bus, and two read him a poem their class had written in Doric, the dialect of Scots spoken in the northeast of Scotland.
Dr. Wilson said: “This was a great opportunity to share Scottish culture with young people. They have been working on projects that reflect our wonderful culture. I hope my enthusiasm for the Scots language came across.”

At the conclusion of Dr. Wilson’s reading with the pupils, they presented him with a copy of The Reading Bus’s recent book of Doric poems Fit Like, Yer Majesty? and encouraged him to send it somewhere around the world to help spread Scottish culture. The children were delighted when he promised to send the book to Argentina.
