Lerwick celebrates Up Helly Aa

Categorised in:
Burning Galley

Residents of Lerwick are participating today in the festival of Up Helly Aa. The annual fire festival takes its name from the Scots word for Epiphany, Up Hailieday, meaning the end of the holy (haily) days of Christmas.

Nowadays, there are Up Helly Aa's across Shetland. However, the Shetland capital's Up Helly Aa remains the largest with the town's citizens looking forward today to a night of guising, dancing and revels in Lerwick's many halls.
