Falkirk MSP urges support for Scots

Categorised in: Parliamentary Issues
Cathy Peattie

Cathy Peattie, MSP for Falkirk East, has called on the Scottish Parliament to recognize the unsatisfactory disadvantage with which organisations working for the traditional arts and culture of Scotland have to labour. It is the contention of the Falkirk MSP that many organisations who work to promote the traditional culture of Scotland will lose staff and premises – and have to stop much of the work they do – after the Scottish Arts Council intimated that many would have their funding cut from March 2009. Cathy Peattie called on the Scottish Parliament to take particular notice of the situation of the Scots language, which, although now the subject of an audit into its provision, had little hope of support before next year comes. Peattie said that an organisition should be set up – separate from Creative Scotland – whose role would be to fund and support the Scots language (along with many other groups) and that, in the interim, steps should be taken to ensure support for Scots language bodies and other similar cultural and traditional organisations.
