Early Christmas present from Scottish Government

The Scottish government has given an early Christmas present to supporters of the Scots language. After months of pressure from activists the government has agreed to include a specific reference to Scots in Building the Curriculum 1, the document that outlines the government’s plans for curriculum development in the next few years.

The decision to include Scots was announced last week by Maureen Watt MSP, the Minister for Schools and Skills at a meeting of the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group on Scots. Government civil servants have been under pressure for a number of months to include a specific reference to Scots. Children’s author, Matthew Fitt, who led the campaign was present to hear the Minister’s announcement. Later Fitt described how pleased he was to hear the news,

“"Generations o bairns hae been tellt the wey they spikk is wrang; the Schools Directorate has noo gien bairns and dominies permission tae spikk Scots alangside English and Gaelic. This will mak a muckle difference tae the lives o thoosands o weans in aw Scotland's local authorities."
